Health Surveillance
The term 'health surveillance' covers any activity which involves obtaining information about an employee's health and which assists in protecting him/her from health risks at work. It detects adverse health effects in individuals, or adverse exposure trends, and also assists in the monitoring of control measures. Benefits to the organisation could be in, reduced sickness absence, reduced litigation, and being seen to be a caring employer. Specific health surveillance could include:
- Respiratory/skin surveillance for workers exposed to irritants/sensitisers e.g. isocyanates
- Audiometry for significant noise exposure
- Hand Arm Vibration
- Biological monitoring (blood / urine testing) for specific causal agents within the workplace e.g. isocyanates
