Exeter Tutorial College

About the college

Exeter Tutorial College was founded in 1984 by principal Ken Jack. It now offers any combination of AS and A level subjects over one or two years, GCSEs and English for overseas students. A level retake courses for examinations in January or June are also offered.

Students may take any subjects in one year, including Law, Business Studies, Psychology, Politics, Environmental Science, English, History, Computing, and any foreign language.

These courses are immensely popular with a very high pass rate.

Our professional commitment is to ensure that every student's abilities and talents have the best chance of being recognised and to ensure that each student can have a full academic development. Examinations have a high priority with precise practices; course assignments are obligatory. Reasonable behavior is expected from students who can then enjoy our university-type atmosphere. Students receive expert counseling about careers and they are carefully advised when making university (UCAS) choices.

The British Accreditation Council Inspectors recently gave the college this Inspection Summary:

"The Inspectors recognised and commended the very considerable improvement to the resources and physical environment of the College since the last Inspection, and also noted the strengthening of the management and administration through additional appointments. Nevertheless, they considered that the strength of the College lay in the quality of what happened in the classroom, and considered that the confidence and interest generated in the students and, in many cases, the results gained in A level examinations, were remarkable. The College has a very clear mission to enable every student to achieve his or her potential, and is normally successful in fulfilling its aim."

Tutors regularly arrange theatre visits, visits to law courts, to bodies of local and central government and to places of historical and scientific interest. These experiences bring reality to students' courses and add meaning to formal studies.

The College is situated near the heart of the city in a quiet residential area adjoining the University School of Education. All teaching is given in our spacious premises which have a library, study room, twelve tutorial rooms including three well-equipped science laboratories, a student common room and a pleasant garden. The computer room is available to students at all times and computer literacy courses are available. The internet is accessible to students at no cost.

There are excellent facilities in the city for every kind of sport, including water sports. Students may use sports centers and fitness clubs, at student costs, with our N.U.S. cards. We will also register any student at Heavitree Health Center; for emergencies, the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital is nearby. The City Center and accommodation are within walking distance. There is a shopping area just two minutes from the College with local produce, takeaways, shops and small cafes. A bus runs direct to the coach station and to the rail station.
