Ben Vorlich Loch Earn Walk.
Location
From Callander follow the A84 west in the Strathyre direction. After you pass Strathyre but around a mile before Lochearnhead turn right along the minor single track road which runs along the south side of Loch Earn.Continue for around three miles until you reach Ardvorlich. There is limited parking alongside the loch at Ardvorlich immediately before & after the little hump back bridge.
Route
On the east side of the hump back bridge walk up the driveway leading to Ardvorlich House but turn left on the marked path just before the house. Walk upwards alongside the burn & continue up the hill road.
You pass through a number of gates, one of which cannot be fully opened, but it does open enough to allow your dog to squeeze through. Ignore the grassy track leading off to the left about 100 yards beyond the first ford notice as this is the path to Glen Vorlich. After crossing a couple of bridges the hill road ends & is followed by a well made track.
After around a mile or so the pathway turns steeply leftwards onto a fairly eroded stretch. Ascend this section onto the north shoulder of the mountain following a less distinct but clear path on the left to the top of the mountain. The west summit with the trig point which you reach first is the highest of the two summits. The walk along the ridge which is not too exposed is rewarded with some fine views over towards Stuc a Chroin on your right & back down towards Loch Earn where you started the walk.
Ben Vorlichi is 985 metres (3232 feet) high so qualifies as a Munro (over 3000 feet). In fact its ideal as a first Munro for you & your dog to complete together.
Approximate distance & time
Distance 5 miles. It should take around 4 hours & 45 minutes to walk the route.
Facilities
Food & drinks are available from the shops & pubs in Strathyre.
Hazards
This is sheep country, you are advised to keep your dog on a lead at all times. If your dog is not too excitable & walks well on a lead you should be fine on this hill, although walking downhill with an over enthusiastic dog is not advised.
