Ormal Electronics manufactures a range of water sensing cables, both for use in its own products, such as Aqualert, and for supply to OEMs. Two technologies are available. One utilises a special hydrogel coating on a small semi rigid rod that swells when it gets wet and produces microbending in an adjacent optical fibre. The optical attenuation produced by the microbending is detected and located by an optical time domain reflectometer that monitors the entire length of the cable. In this way it is possible to produce a truly distributed water sensor, that can detect and locate water over distances in excess of 1,000 metres.
The alternative water sensing cables are more conventional, utilising the electrical conductivity of water to produce a resistance change between two wires wrapped around a central core. These cables do not usually allow location of the water, but have the advantage of requiring very simple electronics for detecting the change in resistance brought about by the presence of water.
Whatever your requirements for water detection, please give us a call or send us an e-mail, we will almost certainly be able to help.
