In 1957 Pat and Gordon Mathews decided to open a Shoe Shop in Purewell.

Many considered this venturePat, Gordon, Anthony and Guy pictured outside the Christchurch shop risky and would not last 12 months. However, G & P Mathews, 'Distinctive Footwear' flourished. So much that they moved from the out of town location and purchased a premises in the heart of Christchurch High Street in 1971. The new shop was renamed Mathews Shoe Centre. With emphasis still very much about service, fit and comfort, their middle son, Tony, joined the company after training with Lotus Shoes and Debenhams. The youngest son, Guy, was soon to follow after gaining valuable experience in Business Studies and Estate Agency.

The Family Partnership drove the business forward and in 1986 they opened one of the first Children's Footwear Outlets in the Country. With conscientious, experienced and trained staff 'Mathews' was the place to go for expert attention and a superb choice of footwear with many of the leading brands being stocked.

In the early days Start-Rite and Lotus were very supportive and in most recent times Clarks expertise has helped move the business on.
Another branch, in New Milton, was opened in 1989 making the Mathews one of the strongest Independent Footwear Retailers on the South Coast.
A third generation, Paul, has recently been promoted to Children's Supervisor.
