Speaker Profiles - Week 2

Monday 26th February

The Revd Philip North is a Priest Administrator of the Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham, an Anglican place of pilgrimage in North Norfolk. He has responsibility for welcoming the many thousands of pilgrims who come to Walsingham each year, mostly travelling from urban areas.  Before moving to Walsingham, Fr Philip spent ten years in the Diocese of Durham working in parishes in Sunderland and Hartlepool.  He is a member of the Church of England’s College of Evangelists.

Tuesday 27th February 

The Revd Fran Lovett has been on Merseyside for almost 10 years, working formerly with Mission in the Economy on unemployment issues and since 2002 as Co-ordinator.  In collaboration with ecumenical colleagues she has developed a number of retail chaplaincies as well as the Airport chaplaincy at Liverpool John Lennon Airport.  Engagement with people at work, endeavouring to address issues of justice and wholeness, promoting analysis and reflection, taking the opportunities to encourage and resource the churches are all part of the task of the Co-ordinator.

Wednesday 28th February

The Revd Shannon Ledbetter was educated at the University of Louisville (BA,), Virginia Theological Seminary (MTS) and the University of Liverpool (PhD).  Prior to entering seminary, Dr Ledbetter was the Public Relations Executive for the British Tourist Authority in New York City.  She has been a Lecturer and Development Officer of Church and Community Connections at Liverpool Hope and is currently the Project Development Manager for New Anfield/Breckfield for Liverpool City Council.  She is Curate at St Mary's Knowsley Village  She created the Liverpool Walk of Faith and is the Founder and Chair of Liverpool Habitat for Humanity.

Thursday 1st March  

Her Honour Judge Elizabeth Steel DL is a Circuit Judge (appointed 1991) sitting at Liverpool on Crime, Family and Civil cases.  Prior to her appointment to the bench her work as a solicitor was primarily civil litigation and she was Chairman of the Steering Committee of the Hillsborough Solicitors' Group.  She was the first female President of the Liverpool Law Society (1989/90) and the first female President of the Athenaeum (2002/3).  She served on the Cripps Committee that reported on the way the law should be changed to give equality to women and was a member of the Race Relations Board (1971-78).  She was a member of the Liverpool Playhouse Board for many years, a non-executive member of the Royal Liverpool University Hospital NHS Trust and Chairman of the BBC North West Advisory Council in the 1980s.

Friday 2nd March

Revd Martyn Newman  was born and brought up in Swindon, the centre of the GWR (God’s Wonderful Railway).  After taking degrees in Economics at Exeter and Theology at Birmingham, he was ordained as a Methodist Minister and has served in Canterbury (as a School Chaplain), Salford, Ellesmere Port, Newcastle-under-Lyme, Sheffield and Crosby.  Since 1998 he has served as the Ecumenical Officer for the Churches of Merseyside, helping to develop and sustain the partnership working between the churches for which Merseyside is renowned throughout the country.  Now in his 40th year of travelling as a Methodist Minister, he is looking forward to retiring and exercising a pattern of ministry without so much hassle.
