Indoor & Winter Fixture Lists Updated - 14/11/09

The second round of the Essex League took place at a wet and windy Hylands Park on Saturday 14th November. The organisers had set up the course on Friday only to find much of it blown away by the strong winds that arrived Friday evening and Saturday morning.

Athletes from Chelmsford Athletic club provided four individual winners as well as three team victories to show that the club is one of the strongest in Essex across all age groups.  The U13 Girls got proceedings off to a fine start by comfortably winning the team race with Katie Solis 2nd, Rosa Prideaux 3rd, Jodie Judd 4th and Natasha Fisher 7th. Chris Waltham won the U13 Boys individual race. Jessica Judd easily won the U15 Girls event and led Chelmsford to team victory. An England International, Jessica had been suffering from a virus for the two weeks preceding this race. "I wanted a confidence booster before the South of England Inter Counties cross country next weekend, I am happy with my performance and should get back to full strength over the next few days."

Stephen Woodford and Sam Robinson were a fine 2nd and 3rd in the U15 Boys event and led their team mates to another win. Alex Short ran one of the best races of the day to win the U17 Boys race; he was always in the leading group and made his move into the wind on the second lap to pull strongly away for a fine victory. Katie Tuttlebury was 3rd in the U20 women’s race while Havering AC's Harriet Scott made light work of the strong wind and heavy rain to easily win the Senior Women’s race. Harriet commented "It was so windy out there at times it was difficult not to end up being blown backwards. I wanted to race here as  Hylands   Park is like a home course for me and I enjoy racing here."  The final race of the day saw a terrific tussle with two Chelmsford athletes featuring prominently in the lead group of four until the final stages. Lee Pickering had been at or near the front on the first lap although towards the end only Ed Messer and Ryan Prout were still in contact with the leaders. Messer made a strong effort with 400metres to go and no one was able to go with him, Prout was 4th and with Messer only 2nd claim for Chelmsford these days the team was 3rd, hopefully with some athletes to come back from illness and injury and others hoping to progress into good form, the Chelmsford men can go on to do very well this winter.

This weekend several Chelmsford athletes are representing Essex in the South of England Inter Counties cross country at Hampstead Heath (21st November). Essex is a strong county at cross country running and hopefully will have considerable success. Some Chelmsford athletes will be in the hunt for individual honours whilst for others it will be a great learning experience.

National Road Relays

Sutton Park near Birmingham was the venue for the annual National Road Relays. Chelmsford had an U13 Girls and U15 Girls team running, unfortunately there were no other age groups entered this year. The teams will gain great experience from running this tough and high standard event.

In the Under 13 Girls race on Sunday Millie Smith produced a strong performance on first leg finishing in 11th position. She was the fastest of the team although Christy Dailly moved them up to 8th which was held by Rosa Prideaux on the final leg. Both Millie and Rosa have another year in this age group.  The Under 15 Girls race was always going to be quite a close race. Chelmsford were up against 40 teams including the reigning champions Aldershot AC, also Bedford AC coached by Alex Stanton who guided Paula Radcliff to the top, and Bracknell AC, another strong club. Sophie Riches went on first leg for Chelmsford and continuing her current top form she came in 10 seconds clear in what was to be the 2nd fastest run of the race. Sophie Croft took over on the second leg. Her year has been interrupted by problems but she is returning to full fitness, despite running strongly for the first 2k of the 3.8k race Sophie found the hills towards the end quite tough and came in 9th. Jessica Judd attacked the last leg in her usual dominant way and passed every team apart from Aldershot who were still 27 seconds clear at the end. Jessica ran the fastest time of the race. To put into perspective this achievement, Aldershot AC won every female race from U13 to Senior Women. The y have performed at this level for nearly 10 years, so the Chelmsford girls can be extremely pleased with their debuts in this event.
